PRESS RELEASE

DATE: April 15, 2026
TOPIC: 2026 CALIFORNIA NONPROFIT OF THE YEAR IS San Fernando Valley Audubon Society for State District 27

The San Fernando Valley Audubon Society is proud to announce that it has been selected as a 2026 California Nonprofit of the Year by State Senator Henry Stern, Senate District 27.

The San Fernando Valley Audubon Society is one of more than one hundred nonprofits that will be honored by their state senators and assembly members for contributions to the communities they serve.

SFVAS has worked tirelessly to protect and preserve the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve. Their efforts include organizing regular cleanups, educating children about local ecology, promoting native plants, providing the LA Fire Department with equipment and consulting services to control wildfires, and hiring FIRE GRAZERS goats to clear flammable invasive vegetation from the Basin. SFVAS has supported the next generation of conservationists with scholarships and advocates tirelessly for the protection of the Basin as a resource for the whole community as well as wildlife.

This small but mighty organization deserves recognition for their impressive efforts, which have made significant impact in the Valley. “We are passionate about our mission to protect our wildlife, and we are grateful to Senator Stern’s office for this honor,” stated Katheryn Barton, SFVAS President.
