SUMMARY:Zoom Event: The Bird Genoscape Project
DESCRIPTION:Erica Robertson\, a graduate student from the University of Colorado\, will be doing a presentation on the Bird Genoscape Project. She will talk about how the Project and its partners are studying the genetic markers of migratory North\, Central\, and South American birds to enhance conservation of these species. In 2009\, the Bird Genoscape Project was created with the goal of developing connectivity maps of at least 100 species of North American migratory birds to understand population- specific trends. The team of people working with this organization include university faculty\, postdoctural researchers\, and graduate students. The Project also partners with National Audubon Society\, Institute for Bird Populations\, and the University of California\, Los Angeles. \nA genoscape is a map of genetic variation across a breeding range of a species. The Project uses a single feather to scan for the genome of the bird in a geographic population. So far\, they have completed genoscapes for 19 species and are working on 17 more at this time. \nMore information from the Bird Genoscape Project website with some great videos about the project:\nhttps://www.birdgenoscape.org/ \n\nErica graduated from George Washington University in 2020 with a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Although she planned to pursue graduate school\, she wanted to first spend time exploring the country and dedicating herself to rock climbing. She moved to Jackson\, Wyoming\, where she lived for two years and developed a deep interest in alpine climbing\, particularly in the Teton Range. During one climbing trip\, she encountered the Black Rosy-Finch: a striking black-and-pink bird that breeds above 12\,000 feet. She was infatuated by this species and the broader rosy-finch complex\, and that experience ultimately inspired her to pursue research on alpine birds in graduate school. Through this interest\, she discovered the Ruegg Lab and the Bird Genoscape Project. Conservation genomics felt like a natural integration of her background in genetics with her growing interest in ecology and evolution. In 2022\, she joined the Ruegg Lab as a Ph.D. student\, where she studies the Brown-capped Rosy-Finch\, Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch\, and Bank Swallow. Broadly\, her research seeks to understand how these species adapt to environmental change\, and she hopes that her work can help inform conservation strategies that protect vulnerable migratory species in a rapidly warming world. \n\nIf you plan to attend via Zoom\, please enter your info and we’ll send you a link prior to the event.\nIf you’ve signed up for previous events\, feel free to skip this step – you’re already on our list!\n\n First Name\n \n Last Name\n \nEmail address: \n \n\n \n\n\n	\n Leave this field empty if you're human:

SUMMARY:In Person/Zoom Event: Monarch Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Sara Cuadra‑Vargas of the Xerces Society will join us on Thursday\, March 26\, to share an in‑depth presentation on monarch butterflies. She will explore the western monarch’s extraordinary migration\, the dramatic population decline of more than 95%\, and the key stressors driving this loss. The talk will also highlight current conservation efforts across California and Baja California\, along with practical actions the public can take to support monarch recovery. \n\nSara Cuadra‑Vargas is a conservation biologist based in Southern California\, where she provides guidance to federal\, state\, and local land managers to preserve and enhance monarch overwintering sites along the California coast. She works closely with partners to support the long‑term resilience of these vital habitats. \nPHOTO CREDIT: The Xerces Society \n\nAttend Our Hybrid Meeting!\nCome in Person:\nEncino Community Center\n4935 Balboa Blvd.\nEncino\, CA 91316\nDoors Open: 6:30 pm – Presentation at 7 pm\nRefreshments Served \nOR \nJoin by Zoom: \nPlease sign up below if you’d like to be notified of this and other upcoming Zoom events. SUMMARY:In Person/Zoom Event: Birding for Boomers - and Everyone Else
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 22nd\, award-winning author and birder Sneed B. Collard III will share the often humorous journey that led to him becoming an avid birder later in life. After graduating with a degree in Marine Biology from UC Berkeley\, Collard embarked on a career of writing for children\, focusing on scientific and environmental topics. While always interested in birds\, he didn’t fully embrace birding as a passion until working on his children’s book Fire Birds – Valuing Natural Wildfires and Burned Forests\, when he and his ten-year-old son began learning more about the birds of western Montana. Since then\, Collard has birded extensively both in the U.S. and abroad and wrote the bestselling book Birding for Boomers – and Everyone Else Brave Enough to Embrace the World’s Most Rewarding and Frustrating Activity. \n \n\nSneed B. Collard III is the author of more than one hundred books for children and adults\, including the award-winning picture book Border Crossings. As well as his degree in Marine Biology\, he earned a Master’s in Scientific Instrumentation at UCSB. His favorite topics include natural wildfires\, invasive species\, and habitat restoration. He is a regular contributor to Bird Watcher’s Digest\, Montana Outdoors\, and other magazines and speaks widely to birding groups\, educators\, and students of all ages. He and his son Braden are co-authors of the birding blog FatherSonBirding.com. \n\nAttend Our Hybrid Meeting!\nCome in Person:\nEncino Community Center\n4935 Balboa Blvd.\nEncino\, CA 91316\nDoors Open: 6:30 pm – Presentation at 7 pm\nRefreshments Served \nOR \nJoin by Zoom: \nPlease sign up below if you’d like to be notified of this and other upcoming Zoom events.
