From sabotaging budding romances to outsourcing childcare duties, birds exhibit a wide array of fascinating behaviors. Why do they develop these tendencies? What other similarities do they share with humans, and what is the evolutionary significance?

Dr. Wenfei Tong’s presentation will delve deeply into these topics, incorporating species from around the world as well as her own research in Kenya and Zambia. Her personal artwork and photography will provide a colorful backdrop to this presentation, which will also include excerpts from her books, Bird Love and Understanding Bird Behavior.

Dr. Wenfei Tong grew up in Singapore where she started birding at 12. She developed a keen interest in field biology as an undergraduate at Princeton and Oxford and has a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from Harvard. She has authored two books, Bird Love and Understanding Bird Behavior, and enjoys sharing her love of birds and biology through painting, photography, teaching, and writing. She currently works at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y.
